World Championship cycles: World Cup 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2017 and Grand Prix series 2017. In 2021 he won the Candidates tournament with 8.5/14 and and faced Carlsen in the World Championship Match in November 2021, losing the Challenge 7.5-3.5 (+0 -4 =7) after 11 games.
He again qualified for the World Championship challenge in 2022 by again winning the Candidates tournament, which had been split over 2021 and 2022 due to Covid-19, this time going down to Ding Liren 1.5-2.5 in the rapid game tiebreaker after the classical games match was drawn 7-7 (+3-3+8) - Carlsen had retired from the World Championship cycle leaving the way open for Ding Liren who had placed 2nd in the Candidates of 2021-22. Nepomniachtchi is eligible to qualify for the Candidates match to be held in April 2024.
